Hi there

Just wanted to make contact with you all, the members of the Norwich Citadel Band. Since receiving our Appointment letter to Norwich Citadel we have been looking at the Corps & the Band Web sites and are very impressed by what we see.
We are very much looking forward to coming to Norwich in the Summer to become your new CO’s and becoming part of the Ministry which is that of Norwich Citadel and Norwich Citadel Band.

Every blessing for the months to come.

Congratulations Richard on your appointment as Bandmaster It is wonderful seeing the band going from strength to strength. Any plans to visit Cape Town in the not too distant future?

As a lad of 18, in 1941 or 42, I was conscripted to join the army and had to travel from Oxfordshire to report to Nelson Barracks in Norwich. The first thought was 'Where is Norwich?' Eventually I arrived at what was then Nelson Barracks which I believe no longer exists. After Initial Training we were allowed out into the city and one Sunday evening I heard a band playing in the street and of course where there was a band I had to be, being an ex-bandsman myself.

I found the band which turned out to be the Salvation Army Band and I thought 'What a good band!'. Eventually they formed up and marched off and I followed until they ended up at the Citadel. All the people went in and as I walked past the door a gentleman asked 'Would you like to go in, soldier?' and I said that I was more interested in the band because it was very good. He said, 'well are you a bandsman?' I replied, 'well yes, I play in local Silver band - I play Cornet'. He said 'would you like to come in? - I'm sure they could fix you up with an instrument', so in I went.

From then on, during my stay in Norwich, I played with the band in the Citadel and although I could not play outside in military uniform, every evening I was with the band in the citadel one of the bands members' families took me home to supper, which made such a difference as I'd never been away from home before. After my war service in Burma first with the Royal Norfolks and then with the Suffolk Regiment I feel I am a bit of an East Anglian. Now in my 87th year I am able to play with the Internet and I searched for Norwich Salvation Army Band and I found your pages, it brings back so many happy memories. Although I have never been back to Norwich I shall never forget the friendliness shown to me.

Please read this out to the band or at one of your meetings, wishing the band every success, especially with your future tour of the USA and Canada this year.

Yours Sincerely,
Norman Rolfe.

It was a great thrill for me to be back in Norwich with the Bristol Easton Band. We enjoyed the fellowship and the opportunity to spend time with you, but it was all too brief. The hospitality afforded us was generous and we appreciated the warm communication between us. We hope you were blessed by our efforts and the able leadership of Col Pearce-Haydon. Look forward to your return visit next year. God Bless you all as you continue to work in the 'Fine City'.

Greetings to Bandmaster Richard Woodrow and all the members of the NCB.

There are many Sundays as I travel around the Northern Division that I would dearly love to have the Norwich Citadel Band supporting me as I lead worship. Your ministry was always so important to us when we were your CO's.

Carelle and I think and pray for you often.

May God continue to bless the wonderful work and ministry of Norwich Citadel.

With kind regards,

Greetings from 'Down Under' and in particular from Brisbane in sunny Queensland.  A number of names in the band are 'blasts from the past' from  my days in London in the mid to late 50's prior to my emigrating to Aus.  Doug Beattie and Bob Munn to mention only two.  I sat with Ron Giles in the Wood Green Band.  Is he still of this world.  I would love to hear from him.  Keep up the good work.  Regards.  John Allen

Excellent website . have visited Norwich on several occasions with different bands. 1960's with Tottenham, 1965 Earlcourt and 1974 with Canadian Staff Band. I recognise many of the names of the current band and note that younger members carrying on the tremendous standard and tradition of the NCB. Some of the band may remember me I played Soprano in all of the bands listed above. Now playing in the reservists band on Horn. Interesting to note that Deryck Diffey is playing cornet, Deryck and I had some graet days in Tottenham and the CSB. Anyway, great to see that everything is under control at Norwich.
